Greetings All,

I recently purchased an AverMedia MCE A180 card. I would like to be able to use this
card to view HD-Cable on Linux. All suggestions are that Kaffeine the application to
use for this. However, I cannot seem to get Kaffeine to show any channels to tune.

When I start Kaffeine, I can select the DVB menu, and select Settings. The card shows up as a Nextwave NXT200x VSB/QAM frontend (Type Atsc). However, there is no
selection in the Source box. If I select Channels, there are no channels to scan.

I am using Suse 10.2, and connecting to a Time Warner Cable system. I have verified that the card works on a Windows system, and automatically locates a number of HD stations. I was under the impression that the tuner on this card is supposed be
Linux compatible. As a novice with Digital TV, I need some step-by-step instructions to
make this happen. If any kind soul can provide this information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx.

Rich

You need to compile suport for your card in your kernel.
Look at this page.
http://www.linuxtv.org
And specially at this:
http://www.linuxtv.org/v4lwiki/index.php/Main_Page
This is another exemple
http://mcentral.de/wiki/index.php/AVerMedia_AverTV_Hybrid_FM_PCI_A16AR
I can tell to you if your card is supported
give me the output of this command as root:
lspci

I have this card to. It is setup and working in MythTV. I have to stop the MythTV backend before Kaffeine "sees" the card.

I also have the problem where it will not scan for channels.

It works in MythTV, but not Kaffeine. Why not?

Kaffeine doesn't scan ATSC networks yet.
See README.atsc for details.

Thanks, I just figured that out.

I'm scanning for channels right now with the dvb-utils. Not sure if that is azap or not.

I have the channels.conf file that I created from the scan. I also downloaded the atsc-converter.c file from http://websvn.kde.org/branches/work/~pfister/.

Now how to I actually use the script. I changed it to an executable, but I don't know how to run it.

Any help on this?

I just realized that I have to compile all of the files in that folder. (Doh!)

When I do, This is the error that I get:
Code:
paul@mythbuntu:~/Documents/atsc_converter$ sudo make
cc -g -O2 -Wall -W -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wstrict-prototypes    atsc-converter.c dvbcfg_zapchannel.c dvbcfg_zapchannel.h dvbfe.h   -o atsc-converter
make: cc: Command not found
make: *** [atsc-converter] Error 127

What am I doing wrong?

I can't install make or automake. I get an error about jde. It seems that this is a bug that will be fixed in the future.
Code:

dpkg: error processing jde (--configure):

Ok, I compiled it on my Suse laptop.
Code:
laptop:/home/paul/atsc_converter # make
cc -g -O2 -Wall -W -Wshadow -Wpointer-arith -Wstrict-prototypes    atsc-converter.c dvbcfg_zapchannel.c dvbcfg_zapchannel.h dvbfe.h   -o atsc-converter
atsc-converter.c: In function ‘convert_channel’:
atsc-converter.c:36: warning: unused parameter ‘private_data’

I ended up with a binary called atsc-converter. I then got a converted channel file that looks like this:
Code:
#Generated by Kaffeine 0.5

I did a mass replace in gedit, replacing the "|" with a space. I now have a file that looks like this:
Code:
#Generated by Kaffeine 0.5
TV MPTV 1 49 52,  1  Atsc 183028    -1 108
TV MPTV 2 65 68,  2  Atsc 183028    -1 108
TV MPTV 3 97 100,  3  Atsc 183028    -1 108
TV MPTV 4 81 84,  4  Atsc 183028    -1 108

TV WVTV-DT 49 52,  0  Atsc 755028    -1 108

I renamed it channels.dvb, and put it in the folder ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine . Kaffeine now shows a list of stations. I can't tune them in, but I'm another step closer. Smile

paul, did you test the generated list without making any changes?

the | are ok in there so what makes you think that it doesn't work. Give it a try!

The first time that I tried it, with the lines, it didn't show any channels. I then removed the lines and the channels showed up, but I couldn't tune any of them in.

I went back to the original converted file. The channel list is now there, and neater than before. I can actually now tune some channels in, but the picture is full of pixelization. It is not like that in MythTV.

Thanks for the advice. It is still not really viewable, but more progress was made.

My reasons for wanting to use this instead of MythTV are simple. MythTV is a PVR, and I really don't record very many shows. I just want a simple TV viewer for digital HDTV. Also, MythTV seems to be a bit bloated, trying to be too many things for too many people. Yet they refuse to even consider adding a live TV mode to it (because it is a PVR).

Edit: The non-HD broadcasts seem to be OK, so it must be the xine settings that need tweaking. I am trying xvmc and bob deinterlacing.

I have found that I have to pause (spacebar) a new broadcast for a few seconds, and then resume. This clears up any picture defects, and also allows the audio to be heard.

Does this mean that I need a larger buffer? Where can I change the setting?

I also found that there was no audio on some channels, no matter how long I paused before I resumed. I found that these channels needed to have AC3 audio enabled under the audio PID settings.

I fixed the audio problem that I had posted about earlier, by muting one of the audio inputs.

Watching ATSC HDTV is pretty good, now. As long as I pause a few seconds after each channel change.

I have also placed the channels.dvb file in .kaffeine but when I start the kaffeine program nothing shows up in broadcasting and I have no channel choices. I have left the "|" bars in the file. Using Mandriva2008.
I have tried many distributions and this is the one that has taken me to where I have sound in the NTSC viewing and well sound period. Any suggestions to get the channels in kaffeine would be appreciated. Confused

Do you have it in the correct folder? Here's where I said I put it.

The ~/ represents your home folder. So put it in /home/<username>/.kde/share/apps/kaffiene.

I don't have this setup anymore, because I installed the newer Mythbubtu version and wiped it out. So I can't check on this for you.
