I tend to have this problem temporarily as I invoke applications like Skype, but after about 20 seconds or so, the audio comes back.

However, today after I updated the Linux Kernel to 3.2.0-26 through the Ubuntu automatic update procedure, the audio drops after a minute or two and never returns.

Are there any hardware tests or cli procedures I should follow regarding installation etc?

Thanks in advance

Okay, this seems to be exacerbated when opening a web browser like Google Chrome or when one is already open.

Seems to be a problem with resource sharing affecting audio

Okay, so invoking Firefox doesn't seem to cause this problem in the same way Google Chrome does (is it where audio files are being preloaded on saved tabs/websites etc?). Invoking Skype used to block out audio temporarily, now this is permanent until the next system reboot or Kaffeine restart.

you can set the used audio driver for kaffeine in its conffile. Turn off the App and open the Text file in a editor

Ubuntu uses the pulseaudio sound server (it sits on top of alsa) so check that all of your apps use pulse as audio out (or often referred to as ao) device
Code:
gedit ~/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/xine-config

Code:
# audio driver
# { auto  pulseaudio  alsa  oss  jack  esd  none  file }, default: 0
audio.driver:pulseaudio

# device used for pulseaudio
# string, default:
#audio.pulseaudio_device:
