Hello,

I'm using Kaffeine as my favourite DVB-T reader/recorder because it's really easy to install and to configure channels.

But I still have a problem with recording. That's not really blocking but seriously disturbing :

When you choose the video format for recording, VIDEO_PS or VIDEO_TS. 80% of time it records m2t and 20% mpg, whatever you choose TS or PS.

I bypassed the problem transcoding with VLC (which is as far as I know the only other decoder which supports m2t) into mpg. But It's long and double work time - All DVD authoring software I know use mpg or avi format.

I decided burning m2t by 7 or 8 on a Blue-ray data disk waiting for a solution.

Do you know about this problem ? Is there a plan to solve it ?
Thank's for your help.

I confirm this problem.
It was already present in Kaffeine version 0.8.3 to 0.8.5 (at least, since I'm using it to record DVB-T programs with a Hauppauge HVR-1100 board).
I am using now 0.8.5 on Ubuntu 7.10, all packages come from the standard distribution. All other functions are working quite very well except this strange behaviour to record program mostly in M2T format, despite I
configure the MPEG_PS format in the Timer Editor.
Can somebody help us please ?

When you choose MPEG_PS, kaffeine replexes the stream to MPEG_PS, except when there is either only audio (radio) or the audio stream is a52. In such cases, kaffeine automatically switches to TS because the PS remuxer doesn't support a52.

To later replex to PS you can use ts2ps from dvb-mpegtools (part of libDVB at http://www.metzlerbros.de/mbros/dvb/).
If you want to make a vob file ready for dvdauthoring, the best is to use ProjectX to cut the TS and demux then replex with "mplex -f8 -o myfile.vob myfile.m2v myfile.mp2".

Also note that MPEG_PS is no more supported in 0.8.6.
FYI, m2t (MPEG_TS) is supported by all Linux video players. This is an official mpeg standard used in all digital video broadcasting networks.

Hello hftom, thank you for these clarifications.

I am trying to find a way to reliably and 'directly' record programs on TV in DVB-T and automatically store them in a compressed format (like xvid).

I need a tool that allows the processing of Kaffeine mpeg files, cut the beginning+end+ads, and they can be read by any Linux player, and also by any home multiplayer media (I own a TVIX/Dvico).
After that, the compression is detailled by other specialized forums.

1. The Kaffeine mpeg2 files cannot be played directly (mostly), by the Tvix or to move inside the movie during the playback. So the TS format must be converted.

2. To cut pieces of movies, Avidemux desynchronizes the sound and video track of MPEG-TS files (even with MPEG-PS files).

3. And I use mplayer/mencoder to compress in mpeg4 which gives very good results.

4. Check that everything is right (sound, aspect ratio...).

Unfortunatelly, the step 2 is not solved at all. In stead of looking for a reliable solution to prevent the out of sync in Avidemux, I'd rather suppress this step.

At step 1, I need to convert TS to PS files. Since some DVB-T files are rejected during the conversion by ProjectX/mpex or replex v0.1.6.8., this step cannot be automatically processed reliably.

Now, one of my questions is : can I ask for an enhancement request for kaffeine : to allow the cuts and merges of mpeg2 sequences, directly ?
This way, we would prevent to use multiple tools, that add at each step, more complexity or failed processings.

There are many different digital video file types available out there, which can make file conversion difficult for the inexperienced. M2T files and MPG files are actually not completely dissimilar, as both are different types of MPEG2 video files. As a result, this is a much less complicated conversion than many other possible video conversions. If a quick file renaming trick doesn’t work, there are many conversion programs available on the Internet. I recommend you Pavtube MTS Converter.
